New Delhi: The redevelopment of Chandigarh Railway Station has reached approximately 90% completion, with major passenger infrastructure including a 72-metre-wide Air Concourse, a 180-metre-long Through Roof, upgraded platforms and modern station buildings taking shape.
The project is being implemented by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Once completed, the redeveloped station is expected to serve as a modern gateway to the Chandigarh-Panchkula region, with improvements in passenger comfort, accessibility and movement.
The redevelopment is being carried out as a brownfield project while the railway station remains fully operational. Construction activity, utility shifting and the development of passenger facilities are therefore being undertaken alongside uninterrupted train operations. RLDA has said it is taking measures to reduce the inconvenience faced by passengers during the ongoing construction.

New Station Buildings and Air Concourse
The upgraded Chandigarh Railway Station will have two G+3 station buildings, positioned on the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides. These buildings will be linked by a central Air Concourse measuring 72 metres in width.
Two Foot Over Bridges, each 12 metres wide, will also connect the passenger areas.
Another key feature of the redevelopment is the 180-metre-long Through Roof, which will extend across the Air Concourse and Foot Over Bridges. The structure is designed to provide weather protection while forming a prominent architectural element of the redeveloped station.
All six platforms are undergoing upgrades, including improvements to platform surfaces and the installation of new shelters. Passenger accessibility is also being strengthened through the provision of 16 lifts and 8 escalators.
The facilities are intended to provide easier, barrier-free movement for senior citizens, Divyangjan and passengers travelling with luggage.
The redevelopment also covers the station’s circulating areas, parking spaces and drop-off and pick-up zones on both the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides. These improvements are aimed at creating more organised movement for passengers and vehicles around the station.
Redevelopment Enters Final Phase
With the project now in its final phase, construction activity remains operationally challenging. The dismantling of the existing Foot Over Bridge has required temporary changes to passenger movement, with passengers being diverted through the new station buildings and the central section of the Air Concourse.
Work in adjoining areas is continuing alongside these arrangements. Roofing, sheeting and drainage work associated with the Through Roof are also being carried out.
RLDA said the inconvenience caused during the recent rains was primarily linked to the roofing and drainage work that remains under construction. The authority has maintained that these conditions are temporary and will not reflect the passenger facilities available once the redevelopment is completed.
The balance roofing and drainage works, along with the dismantling of the old Foot Over Bridge, have been prioritised for completion at the earliest.
With around 90% of the redevelopment work completed, the scale of the transformation is becoming increasingly visible. The completed Chandigarh Railway Station will feature modern station buildings, a large Air Concourse, weather-protected passenger areas, upgraded platforms, lifts and escalators, along with improved accessibility, parking and circulation facilities.

The remaining construction-related inconvenience is expected to continue through the final phase of the project. RLDA has said it remains focused on completing the outstanding works while maintaining passenger safety, uninterrupted railway operations and minimising disruption.
